Residents of India’s northern Ludhiana city complained of respiratory problems as thick smog continued to shroud the city on yesterday, November 14.

Much of India’s north, including New Delhi, has been reeling under thick blanket of life-threatening smog that has besieged the region for weeks now.

According to local residents, people are experiencing irritation in the throat and burning eyes due to the smog.

Smog has also reduced visibility in the region, giving a harrowing time to commuters.

The Delhi state government declared a public health emergency last week after pollution levels in the city spiked, a yearly phenomenon blamed on a combination of vehicle exhausts, dust and illegal crop burning in northern states of Haryana and Punjab, where Ludhiana is located.
