The Department of Prisons has decided to provide telephone facilities to prison inmates to contact their family members and relatives.
Outside visitors to all prisons in the country were temporarily halted until further notice from the 5th of October, after Covid-19 cases began to resurface in the country.
Taking into account the prevailing situation, the Prisons Department made arrangements for the inmates to make free calls to their homes.
Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, commenting on the matter, said, “As we have temporarily suspended outside visitors to prisons, we provided the inmates with a toll-free telephone rendered by Sri Lanka Telecom. Its facility has now been extended for another month. Accordingly, the inmates have been given the opportunity to make a five-minute call to their families once a week.”
