Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (PHU) Leader Udaya Gammanpila says that there is a need to change the existing lease law in the country.
The former parliamentarian mentioned this speaking to Derana 360° political program on the leasing crisis and the current political situation.
Since the inception of the leasing system, had the customer missed a few payments, the vehicles were seized using thuggery and force, Gammanpila pointed out.
This system is not particular to one leasing company and applies to all leasing counties in the country, he added.
Once the vehicle is seized the customer loses all rights to the vehicle as the legal ownership of the vehicle lies with the leasing company, he points out.
Thereby, the lease law should be amended that the owner of the leased item may not seize the said item forcefully from the legal possessor; the item may only be seized through a court order, stated Gammanpila.
